The Sunoco Pit Stop
Celebrating Expansion into Puerto Rico with a Custom Auto Build
Posted on 2/24/2024
To properly mark the launch of Sunoco in Puerto Rico, we sent the expert builders on the Throtl team down to Puerto Rico with a mission to revamp and design a custom car.
The Project Car
The team purchased a modified 1995 Mazda FD RX-7 with plans to completely refurbish it in 10 days. Procured sight unseen locally, the vehicle looked to be well-manicured upon arrival. And although the motor purred, the transmission clearly had a mind of its own as evidenced by a shifter that bounced about freely. A few other knocks and clunks would also call for inspection once on the lift.
The Build
The Throtl team set up shop at Prestige Performance, a team of auto enthusiasts who special in racing mechanics. It was a tall order to include a widebody kit, fully built engine, upgraded suspension, brakes, a wing exchange, and much more.
A pre-ordered replacement engine arrived from New Zealand’s own Mad Mike, who has become revered in the drift racing world. After being wrapped in Sunoco branding, equipped with new wheels, and a touch-and-go engine installation, the newly enhanced RX-7 was off to the Puerto Rico Racing Expo.
The Puerto Rico Experience in Summary
Throtl pulled off yet another amazing custom renovation and was a key player in Sunoco launching in the Puerto Rico market. The journey, highlighting the intense 10-day build and the celebrations surrounding the launch, was documented in a 5-part YouTube series.
